Further development of urban railway systems in Vietnam

The year 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam. The Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Line 1 project is expected to contribute to the further development of Vietnam strengthening the relationship of trust between the two countries. Many other urban railway system projects are underway in Vietnam including the Line 3A, an extension of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Line 1, and the Hanoi City Urban Railway Line 2, which will pass through the center of Hanoi City.

Completion of Line 1, which is due to have 11 surface and three sub-surface stations, is expected in 2018 the’s

Anticipated completion date for the first line is scheduled to be 2018. The HCMC transport master plan proposed five further metro lines which, with Line 1, will approximate to 107km (66 miles). The same plan, which also included three monorail routes totaling 37km (23 miles), indicated completion of the schemes by 2020, by which time the population forecast is 13.5 million. With Ho Chi Minh City as Vietnam’s main economic centre, it remains to be seen if the earlier studies for rapid transit in the capital, Hanoi, will be revived in some form.
